2 min read · One tiny detail that already belongs only to your baby
You have not held your baby's hand yet.
You may not even know exactly what their face looks like.
But by around five months pregnant, something remarkably personal is already appearing:
their fingerprints.
When do fingerprints form?
By around 17 weeks, lines have developed on the skin of your baby's fingers.
These form the distinctive patterns that become fingerprints.
Owloo Did You Know?
Your baby's fingerprints are unique. Even identical twins, who share the same DNA, do not have perfectly identical fingerprints.
A tiny hand that is already completely theirs
At this stage, your baby's fingernails are also beginning to grow and their hands can grip.
Those same fingers will eventually wrap around yours.
They will grasp blankets, explore toys, pick up crumbs and point at everything interesting in the room.
But the little pattern printed onto each fingertip is already being created now.
Can you see fingerprints on an ultrasound?
No. They are far too fine to be visible on a routine pregnancy ultrasound.
This is one of those developments taking place quietly in the background — invisible to you, but already making your baby uniquely themselves.
Those little hands will soon start exploring
