One day you look down at your growing bump and notice something new.
A thin, darker line running vertically down the middle of your stomach.

It is one of pregnancy's most recognisable skin changes, and in most cases it is completely normal.
What exactly is the linea nigra?
Linea nigra literally means “black line”.
But the line itself is not actually new.
Everyone has a line of connective tissue running vertically down the centre of the abdomen called the linea alba.
It is usually so close to your natural skin colour that you barely notice it.
During pregnancy, increased pigmentation can make this existing line darker and much more visible. Once that happens, it is called the linea nigra.

When does the linea nigra appear?
It can become noticeable during the second trimester.
For many pregnant women, it becomes easier to see somewhere around the middle of pregnancy, although the timing and appearance vary from person to person.
Some linea nigras are very dark and obvious.
Others remain faint.
And some people barely develop a visible line at all.
Why does pregnancy make the line darker?
Pregnancy hormones can increase the production of melanin — the pigment that gives colour to your skin, hair and eyes.
That is why pregnancy can cause several pigmentation changes at the same time.
You may also notice darker nipples or areolas, freckles that appear more noticeable or patches of darker skin.
Linea nigra tends to be more visible on naturally darker skin tones because there is more existing pigmentation.
Does the linea nigra tell you whether you're having a boy or girl?
No.
You may hear old pregnancy myths claiming that the length or position of the line predicts your baby's sex.
There is no reliable medical evidence that linea nigra can tell you whether you are expecting a boy or a girl.
It is a pigmentation change — not a gender predictor.
Will it disappear after pregnancy?
Usually, yes.
As pregnancy hormone levels fall after birth, the line generally becomes lighter over the following weeks or months.
For some people, a faint line remains visible for longer.
There is usually nothing you need to do to treat it.

Your bump will disappear after birth — and your linea nigra will probably fade too. One simple close-up photograph can preserve a tiny detail of pregnancy that is surprisingly easy to forget.
Can you prevent it?
Linea nigra is a normal hormonal response, so there is no need to try to prevent it.
Sun exposure can make pigmentation darker, so normal pregnancy-safe sun protection is sensible when your abdomen is exposed.
If you notice a skin change that looks unusual, becomes painful, itchy or worries you for any reason, mention it to your healthcare professional rather than assuming it is linea nigra.
