Tummy Time for Newborns: When to Start and How to Make It Easier

2 min read · For babies from birth to 2 months

Tummy time is the time an awake baby spends in a tummy-down position while being directly supervised. It can begin from birth and does not have to start with a long session on the floor.

For a newborn, a few comfortable seconds on your chest, across your lap or on a firm play mat can be enough.

Why is tummy time important?

Tummy time gives your baby opportunities to practise lifting and turning their head while gradually building strength in the neck, shoulders and upper body.

These early movements support developing head control and prepare the body for later skills such as rolling, sitting and crawling.

When can tummy time begin?

You can start from birth, provided your baby is awake, comfortable and medically well.

One of the gentlest ways to begin is chest-to-chest tummy time:

  1. Recline in a secure position while fully awake.
  2. Place your baby tummy-down on your chest.
  3. Support them and keep their nose and mouth clear.
  4. Talk softly or allow them to look at your face.

Owloo Insight

Tummy time does not have to begin on the floor.

Your chest or lap can provide a gentler starting position while your newborn still practises lifting and turning their head.

As your baby becomes more comfortable, try short sessions across your lap or on a firm mat on the floor.

How long should newborn tummy time last?

Begin with a few seconds or approximately one minute. Several brief attempts spread across the day are usually easier than one long session.

There is no need to reach an exact time during every attempt. Gradually increase the total as your baby becomes stronger and more comfortable.

What if your newborn dislikes tummy time?

Many newborns protest because the position requires effort. Do not leave your baby distressed to reach a time target.

Instead, try:

  • a shorter session;
  • tummy time on your chest or lap;
  • bringing your face closer;
  • trying before rather than directly after a feed;
  • using one simple visual object;
  • stopping before frustration becomes intense.

Ten calm seconds can be more useful than several minutes of crying. Pick your baby up, help them settle and try again later.

Owloo Tip for Parents

Stop before frustration becomes intense.

A short, calm attempt helps your baby build familiarity with the position. Comforting your baby and trying again later is not giving up.

How can you make floor tummy time easier?

Use a firm mat and lie down at your baby’s level. Your face and voice may be more engaging than any toy.

You can also position one high-contrast card securely in front of your baby, within their close viewing range. Keep it still and remove it when your baby looks away.

For detailed guidance, read how to use high-contrast cards with a newborn.

Important safety reminder

Tummy time is only for an awake, directly supervised baby. If your baby becomes sleepy, move them to a safe sleep space and place them on their back.

Never allow yourself to fall asleep with your baby lying on your chest, and never leave pillows, cards, toys or loose materials in the baby’s sleep space.

When should you ask for advice?

Speak with a healthcare professional if your baby appears to be in pain, has difficulty breathing, strongly favours one side, seems unusually stiff or floppy, or if you have concerns about their movement or head control.

Frequently asked questions

When can tummy time begin?

Tummy time can begin from birth when your baby is awake, comfortable, medically well and directly supervised.

How long should newborn tummy time last?

Begin with a few seconds or approximately one minute. Several short attempts throughout the day are usually easier than one long session.

What if my newborn cries during tummy time?

Stop before your baby becomes very distressed. Try a shorter session, use your chest or lap, bring your face closer or try again at another calm time.

Does tummy time have to happen on the floor?

No. Chest-to-chest tummy time or a tummy-down position across your lap can provide a gentler starting point.

Can my baby sleep on their tummy after tummy time?

No. Tummy time is only for awake, directly supervised play. Babies should always be placed on their backs in a safe sleep space.

The Owloo approach

Tummy time does not need to be perfect. Begin with the easiest position, stay close and gradually build from your baby’s comfortable starting point.

Start small. Stay close. Follow your baby’s lead.
