Does your baby spin the same object, shake a rattle, bang a toy against the floor or drop it again and again?
To an adult, the action may look repetitive. To your baby, it can be an experiment.
At nine and ten months, babies increasingly notice that their movements create results. Repeating an action gives your baby another opportunity to observe what happened, adjust the movement and discover whether the same result appears again.
Repetition is not simply doing the same thing. It is one of the ways babies investigate how the world works.
Why does your baby repeat the same action?
Your baby may repeatedly:
- turn a moving part;
- shake an object to create sound;
- drop a toy and look towards the floor;
- bang an object against a surface;
- open and close a safe container or flap;
- push something and watch it move.
Each repetition gives your baby more information.
They may begin noticing that:
- a stronger movement produces a different result;
- the sound changes on another surface;
- an object stops moving unless it is pushed again;
- a dropped object moves out of sight;
- the same action can produce a familiar result;
- small changes in grip affect what happens next.
Repetition is an early experiment
Your baby is not planning an experiment in the adult sense. However, the pattern is similar:
Act. Observe. Adjust. Try again.
The first movement may happen accidentally. After seeing or hearing the result, your baby may repeat it more intentionally.
For example, your baby may touch a spinner and see it move. The next time, they may look at it before reaching, push with more force or wait for it to stop before touching it again.
How does repetition support movement planning?
Before moving an object, your baby must organise the eyes, body, arms and hands.
Repeated attempts provide opportunities to change:
- where the hand approaches from;
- which fingers make contact;
- how firmly the object is held;
- how much force is used;
- whether one or both hands are needed.
This is part of early motor planning: working out how to organise a movement to reach a result.
The action does not need to look smooth. Your baby may miss, pause, change grip or use the whole arm before gradually becoming more precise.
Why does repetition give babies a sense of control?
Many events in a baby’s day are organised by adults. Repetitive play gives your baby an opportunity to initiate something independently.
Your baby may discover:
“I moved my hand and the spinner turned.”
“I shook the rattle and heard a sound.”
“I released the toy and it fell.”
This does not mean your baby understands the full sequence. It means their own action is becoming connected with a visible, audible or physical result.
Examples of repetition during everyday play

Turning a spinner

A perfect spin is not required. Tapping the panel, holding the edge or stopping the movement are also forms of investigation.
Shaking a rattle

Opening and closing
A safe flap, lid or simple container can introduce another predictable sequence: open, close, disappear and return.
Only offer objects designed for infant use, with no loose parts or trapping points.
Why do adults interrupt repetition?
Adults often assume the baby is bored, using the toy incorrectly or needs a new activity.
We may quickly:
- show another way to use the object;
- move the baby to a different activity;
- take over the movement;
- offer several new toys;
- stop dropping or banging immediately.
Unless the action is unsafe, allowing a little more time can help your baby complete the sequence they are exploring.
When should you join in?
Join when your baby looks towards you, offers the object, vocalises or appears to invite a response.
You can:
- describe the action: “You made it turn.”
- return a toy that rolled too far away;
- copy one gentle action;
- smile or respond to your baby’s excitement;
- make the activity safer or easier to reach.
Observe quietly when your baby is calm, focused and independently repeating an action.
What if your baby does not repeat the action?
Not every baby responds to an experience through repetition.
Your baby may prefer to look, hold, mouth, turn away or move towards something else. They may also repeat an action later, after first observing it quietly.
Not repeating one activity does not mean your baby has failed to understand it. Interest, energy, movement abilities and sensory preferences all influence how a baby explores.
Offer the experience again another day without turning it into a test.

Is it normal for my baby to repeat one action many times?
Yes. Repetition is a common way for babies to compare results, adjust movements and make an experience more predictable.
Should I stop my baby from dropping toys?
Stop when the object is unsafe, heavy or may damage the surroundings. Otherwise, supervised dropping with a lightweight baby-safe object can be part of exploration.
How can I make repetitive play more interesting?
Make one small change rather than introducing a completely different activity. Change the surface, position or direction while keeping the basic action familiar.
What if my baby loses interest quickly?
That can be normal. Follow your baby’s attention and offer the activity again later. A brief period of focused exploration may be enough.
