What Does a Newborn Really Need? A Simple Checklist Before Baby Arrives

4 min read · A calmer newborn shopping list for the third trimester

Baby shops can make it look as though a newborn needs an entire house full of equipment.

They do not.

Before you buy another gadget, basket or tiny item marketed as essential, start with what your baby genuinely needs to be safe, warm, fed, clean and close to you.

Everything else can come later.

1. A safe place to sleep

This comes before nursery decoration.

Your newborn needs an appropriate crib, bassinet or other approved infant sleep space with a firm, flat mattress.

For sleep, place your baby on their back and keep the sleep surface clear of pillows, loose bedding, stuffed toys and other soft objects.

You do not need decorative cot bumpers, pillows or baby nests for sleep.

Start With Safety

The prettiest nursery item is not necessarily the most useful one.

Prepare baby's safe sleep space first. You can choose the artwork, baskets and decorative details later.

2. A small amount of clothing

Newborns grow quickly.

You do not need twenty outfits in the smallest size.

A practical starting point includes a small collection of:

  • bodysuits or vests;
  • sleepsuits;
  • socks if needed;
  • weather-appropriate layers;
  • one comfortable going-home outfit.

Choose pieces that are easy to wash and easy to change.

3. Nappies and simple changing supplies

Whether you choose disposable or reusable nappies, have a small supply ready.

You may also want:

  • cotton wool or suitable gentle wipes;
  • a changing mat or washable towel;
  • a simple barrier cream;
  • muslin cloths.

You do not need a complicated changing station in every room.

4. What you need for feeding depends on how you feed

There is no single shopping list that suits every family.

Your feeding equipment will depend on whether you breastfeed, express milk, use formula or combine approaches.

Ask your maternity care team for guidance relevant to your plans rather than buying large quantities of products in advance.

5. A safe way to travel

If your baby will travel by car, you need an appropriate infant car seat.

For newborns and babies under one year, car seats should be used rear-facing according to current NHTSA guidance.

Buy or arrange your seat before the due date and learn how it fits your particular vehicle.

6. A way to take baby outside

Depending on your lifestyle, this might be:

  • a pram;
  • a pushchair suitable from birth;
  • an appropriate baby carrier or sling;
  • a combination of these.

You do not necessarily need every option.

7. Your baby needs you more than a toy collection

Newborn play is wonderfully simple.

Your face. Your voice. Being held. Short awake periods. Looking at strong visual contrast. Gentle movement and supervised tummy time when appropriate.

You do not need a basket overflowing with toys before your baby is born.

Owloo Rule of Thumb

Buy fewer things — but understand why you bought each one.

If you cannot explain how an item will support safety, care, everyday life, play or a memory you genuinely want to keep, you probably do not need it before birth.

Essential versus nice to have

Essential: safe sleep, feeding, nappies, clothing, hygiene basics and safe transport.

Useful depending on your family: pram, sling, feeding equipment, changing station and baby monitor.

Nice to have: decorative nursery pieces, large toy collections, multiple gadgets and items you can easily buy later if you discover you actually need them.

When you want one thoughtful start instead of dozens of toys

Hello World Kit | 0–6 months

The Hello World Kit is not a newborn essential like a safe sleep space or car seat — and we think that distinction matters. It is a considered next step for parents who want a simple collection of visual, sensory, motor and memory pieces instead of buying separate toys without knowing when or why to use them.

Frequently asked questions

What does a newborn actually need before birth?

Start with a safe sleep space, basic clothing, nappies, feeding essentials appropriate for your plans and a safe way to transport your baby.

How many newborn clothes should I buy?

You only need a modest number of basics at first because babies grow quickly. Choose easy-to-wash bodysuits and sleepsuits rather than buying many outfits in the smallest size.

Does a newborn need lots of toys?

No. Newborn interaction can be very simple and centred on faces, voices, touch, movement and short periods of visual attention.

What is the safest way for a newborn to sleep?

Healthy babies should be placed on their back on a firm, flat sleep surface in an appropriate infant sleep space, without pillows, loose bedding or soft objects.

Does a newborn car seat need to face backwards?

Yes. Current NHTSA guidance states that children under one year should travel in a rear-facing car seat appropriate for their age and size.

The Owloo approach

Your baby does not need everything.

Your home does not need to look ready for an advertisement.

Prepare the important things first.

Safe. Simple. Useful. Then hello.
